Admissions Criteria
There are no specific academic prerequisites for admission to the International Honors Program; students come from all academic disciplines, including economics, biology, anthropology, environmental studies, public health, engineering, philosophy, art, urban studies, international relations, sociology, history, religion, and more. Students must be at least 18 years of age and preferably have completed at least two years of college prior to the start of the program. Most participants are enrolled at a university/college or are recent graduates, but others are welcome to apply. Since IHP began in 1958, the student age range has been from 18 to 59.
The admissions committee strives to select students who will be the best possible match for the program. All applicants should demonstrate maturity and the motivation to participate in an academically challenging program.
The International Honors Program does not discriminate on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, race, color, age, religion, national origin, or disability.
Application Process
Complete and sign the application available below and have a parent or legal guardian and a representative from your school sign the form. Submit the application pieces outlined in the application form.
Download IHP Application Form (2008-2009).
The application for 2009-2010 will be available shortly. In the meantime, IHP will accept the 2008-2009 application form for all programs.
You may submit a partial application and have recommendation letters or transcripts sent directly by the recommender or university. However, your application will not be reviewed until all application pieces have been received. IHP may notify you of missing pieces, but it is ultimately your responsibility to make sure that all supporting materials are received and forms are complete and returned to IHP for consideration.
Once all the materials have been received, the application will be sent to the Admissions Committee for review. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Upon receipt of your completed application, you may be contacted for an informal phone or in-person interview. Applicants will receive a list of alumni contacts and are encouraged to speak with more than one previous participant to learn more about the Program.
Generally, notification of admissions decisions will be communicated within two weeks of your interview. Accepted students will receive preparatory information, such as the IHP Program Handbook and a series of bulletins prior to departure. These materials will include guidelines regarding immunizations, visas, packing, readings, etc.
Application Submission Dates
IHP has moved to a rolling admissions process to accommodate students who must declare their intention to study abroad early to meet their college or university requirements. The admissions committee will review complete applications as they are received in the IHP office. IHP urges those interested in applying for financial aid from IHP to submit their application as soon as possible. Some programs also may fill long before the published closing dates, so please be sure to submit your application early.
Late applications are considered on an individual basis (depending on available space on the requested program). If the deadline has passed for the program in which you are interested, please contact the IHP office to determine if space is available.
Fall Semester Closing Dates:
March 15: For all fall and full-year programs
Spring Semester Closing Dates:
October 1: For all spring programs
We encourage you to contact our office early to discuss your program choice and begin planning your study abroad experience. We recommend applying as soon as possible and well before the closing date. You should also specify a second-choice program.
Passport Note
You must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the program ends. If you do not, you should apply for one at once.
